How to Fix the "Item Name Material is Set up in QuickBooks as Category" Error
If you're encountering the error:
"Item name material is set up in QuickBooks as category and cannot be used in a line item,"
it means the item you're trying to sync is labeled as a category in QuickBooks, which can't be used as a line item. You can resolve this issue with a small adjustment in either QuickBooks or ServiceBox.
Step 1: Rename the Item in ServiceBox
-
In ServiceBox, go to Settings > Quote Items.
-
Locate the line item that's causing the error (e.g., "Materials").
-
Edit the name to something different—like "Supplies" or "Equipment".
-
Try resyncing ServiceBox with your accounting software (QuickBooks Desktop or Online).
-
If the error disappears, the issue is resolved.
Step 2: Rename the Category in QuickBooks (If Needed)
If the error persists:
-
Log in to QuickBooks.
-
Go to the Lists menu and select Chart of Accounts.
-
Locate the category that's causing the error (e.g., "Materials").
> Note: "Materials" is a common example—your category name may vary. -
Edit the name to something slightly different, like "Raw Materials" or "Building Materials".
-
Resync your QuickBooks account with ServiceBox again.
By following these steps, you should be able to clear the error and continue invoicing without issues. If the problem continues, contact support@jobboxsoft.com for further help.
