How to resolve error: The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was 5.7.0 authentication required.
If you're trying to set up custom SMTP server settings in ServiceBox and receive the following error when sending a test message:
Error: The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was 5.7.0 authentication required.
It’s likely that Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is enabled on your Google account. In this case, you’ll need to generate an App Password to use with your SMTP settings instead of your regular Google account password.
Step 1: Check if Two-Factor Authentication is Enabled
-
Log in to your Google Account: https://www.google.com/
-
Click on the Security tab from the left-hand menu.
-
Under “2-Step Verification”, check the status.
-
If it says “On”, then 2FA is enabled.
-
-
Click on “2-Step Verification” to manage or confirm your settings.
Step 2: Generate an App Password for SMTP
If 2FA is enabled, follow these steps to generate a Google App Password:
-
From the Security tab in your Google account, scroll to “App Passwords.”
-
Select Mail from the “Select app” dropdown.
-
Choose Other in the “Select device” dropdown.
-
Enter a name (e.g., “SMTP Server”) and click Generate.
-
A 16-digit app password will be displayed. Copy this code.
Step 3: Use the App Password in ServiceBox
When configuring your SMTP server settings in ServiceBox, use the 16-digit app password instead of your regular Google password. This should resolve the authentication error and allow successful test messages.
