QuickBooks Desktop - error message "Name already in use"

Issue

When syncing with QuickBooks Desktop, you may encounter the error:
"Name is already in use."

 

Cause

This error means that the name you're trying to sync from ServiceBox already exists in QuickBooks Desktop — either as another active record, a different item type, or an inactive record that still retains the name.

 

Solution

To resolve this error:

  1. Search QuickBooks for the name that triggered the error.

  2. Check if the name is:

    • Already used by another customer, vendor, or item

    • An inactive record that still occupies the name slot

  3. Choose one of the following options:

    • Rename the record in QuickBooks to free up the name

    • Rename the item in ServiceBox to something unique

Once the conflict is resolved, reattempt the sync.
