Resolve an AVS error - FAQ

AVS (Address Verification Service) is a fraud prevention tool used by credit card companies to verify that the billing address provided during checkout matches the one on file with the card issuer. If there's a mismatch—especially with the postal code—an AVS error may occur.

What Causes an AVS Mismatch?

An AVS mismatch happens when the billing address entered during checkout does not match the address registered with your bank or credit card company. Most often, the error is caused by differences in the postal code.

These mismatches can trigger your bank to put a temporary hold on the funds (typically 2–3 business days), even though the transaction may be declined or flagged.

How to Resolve This Issue in ServiceBox

To prevent or resolve AVS mismatch errors when processing payments through ServiceBox:

  • Ensure the Postal Code entered matches the billing address on your credit card statement.

  • Do not use a shipping address or an outdated address if it's different from your card's billing address.

  • 🏦 Contact your bank or card issuer if you're unsure what billing address is on file.

Even a small discrepancy (e.g. different zip/postal code formatting) can result in an AVS failure.
