Viewing Custom Fields on Mobile App

Fixing custom field visibility discrepancies between iPhone and Android in the ServiceBox mobile app.

Issue

A concern was raised by some of our customers regarding disparities in the information displayed on the "Info" page of our mobile application, specifically between iPhone and Android devices.

Workers using iPhones reported smooth access to and accurate viewing of specific information. However, a contrasting experience emerged among users with Android devices, who encountered discrepancies in the displayed content. This article delves into the cause of the issue and the resolution that ensures a seamless user experience across platforms.

Cause

After a detailed investigation, our support team found that the issue was not due to a bug in the mobile app itself but was related to a settings configuration. A custom field flag labeled "Restricted" had been set to "Yes", which limited visibility of that field to administrators only. This setting was the cause of the variation in display behavior between iPhone and Android devices.

Resolution

If users are unable to see custom fields on their screens, the fix is to change the setting for the field:

  • Go to the field’s settings.

  • Uncheck the Restricted box to mark the field as not restricted.

When this setting is enabled (set to “Yes”), the field’s content is treated as confidential and is hidden from standard users—including those using the mobile app. Unchecking it allows all users to view the field, creating a consistent experience across both iPhone and Android.
